Fun fact: Beginning spirits cannot fly.
Flew off some high platform above a city, only to watch my poor fire spirit roll off the edge and plummet directly down to the city, resulting in death. This is the only good thing that came out from the beta for me.

Apparently they've released a fairly huge patch (~600 MB) today, so we better go ahead and start downloading it now! Hopefully the servers will be back up quickly. na.aiononline.com/en/news/open-beta-boosted-with-new-patch.htmlEDIT: Haha. "1. Sanctum’s map image direction has been changed so the city’s entrance is located at the lower end"

Alright, someone tell me when is this game supposed to fun to play. From what I can tell, solo is usually 1v1 on some random enemy until it dies, then repeat it 50 times until I level. Supposed to be better end game, so who knows.
Edit: Well, what a boring end to a beta. A message about server going down follow by a simple disconnect message. Feels like what happens when maintenance is about to happen.

Whee! That was fun! I hope you guys all enjoyed it. I miss flying already... Hi, Monkey! Too bad you didn't let us know you were playing. I played in a couple of the closed betas alone and it wasn't all that much fun. Playing in a group was much more satisfying. Even so, it's still pretty grindy... I keep telling myself that over and over... Eventually, I'll forget the flying and only remember the grind... I hope...

I only played for 2 days total in the open beta. D: Sadly enough it reminded me way too much of other certain MMOs where it was party or bust if you wanted to level at a "decent" rate. Also mage class sucked, not flashy enough. Would've been better off as a healer or tank with the LOL I THROW U. Edit: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJJR92X2w-cWHY DID I NOT PLAY AS A TANK!?

This just doesn't go with the rest of what I've seen from them... Odd.

That looks familiar, but I can't quite figure it out....

I think Tim Absath had a pretty good review of Aion. I thought it was fun for a short time (especially since it was free), but I don't think it would be worth it to me to pay to play it. I might consider it again if they ever change the pay model to a Guild Wars style "pay only once" model. There were just enough quirks that I could handle if it was free to play. For example, having to stand around waiting for a boss to respawn because another group beat us to him; or while waiting for said boss to respawn some other group runs up pulling aggro on everything in the area and getting everyone killed. Too much of the game is dependent on other people - I really don't think the game can be soloed (unless you grind your levels to a point where you are 20 levels above all the monsters on your quest line), and progress can be slowed by other people doing the same thing. This is why I like the instanced model of Guild Wars so much...only your group can be in a level at any given time, so it is always possible to do the quests at your own pace. Flight though, I could do that for hours...

That's pretty much my stance, exactly. I especially hate not being able to get away from other groups (PvE or PvPvE)

I haven't played Aion (obviously ) but I know it won't go free-to-play unless they drastically change their business model, because right now the "timesink-grind-pay-per-month MMO" model seems to work... I've seen a lot of people who quit MMOs and then go back a few months later because they either feel empty/bored without it after playing it for so long or they don't want to feel like they've wasted all of that invested money and time just to drop the game and ultimately end the day with nothing. It's kinda sickening, IMO... the "30 day trials!" always make me think "The first hit's always free!" I could give a really long-winded rant about all of the things I hate about the current business model of monthly MMOs but I think I'll just stop there... it's too bad though because the game looked awesome

Oh no, you got all excited because you thought I had something to say about Aion but I've just wasted your time? You should reply something about how mad you are, particularly if you're Jupiter.

I'm so mad...ok that was a delayed response (year and a half?). Anyway, I came to post actually about Aion's street clothes since I keep tabs on that game to see what NC Soft is up to (ok I'm too lazy to get off their distro list). And I came across one of their pets (you have to buy with real money!!?)...a Pudgy Porgus!! I ASK YOU WHO DOESN'T NEED A PUDGY PORGUS?! And I found this snipet interesting:

Wait... so what about the street clothes?
I was trying to come up with a snarky reply about a Pudgy Porgus when I clicked the link. OMG!! Yes, I am someone who would need a Pudgy Porgus (but... $10? Really?). So cute!

Just that they are advertizing you can now buy street clothes for your character in the Aion store, but it's just another money making scheme. Somehow I can spend money on costumes in GW and scoff at buying clothes in other games? I lqtm'd at the Cute/Hot/Vivacious denim dresses. And the "fashion article"
